Hockey has been played outdoors at St. Mary’s in the winter months since the early years of the 20th Century because Orchard Lake borders the western boundary of the 115-acre campus, but only as an MHSAA team sport since Winter 1993-94.
In 17 seasons, the Ice Eaglets have been at their best in the state playoffs, playing for the Regional Championship 17 times, winning 11. In 2005, the Ice Eaglets advanced to and won the MHSAA Division III State Championship. In 2007, the Ice Eaglets won the MHSAA Division I State Championship in only their second year in Division I. The 2008 Division I State Championship was shared with the Marquette Redmen when the game was called at the end of eight overtime periods (109 minutes)with the score tied at 1-1, the longest game in Michigan high school history and second longest in U.S. high school history.
Besides playing solid, fundamentally sound hockey, members of the Ice Eaglets are solid and fundamentally sound in the classroom. Six Eaglet Hockey teams have qualified for the Academic All-State Team Award by the MHSHCA: 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, and 2009-10.
In addition, four times a senior Eaglet was named Academic All-State Player of the Year: Kyle Miller (2004), Jonathan Castine (2006), Anthony Aukskalnis (2007), and Jordan Kieltyka (2009).
Sixteen senior Eaglets have been named Academic All-State: (2010) Kevin Killian, Alex Zerbo, Luke Guminik, Ian Brambs; (2009) Maxwell Borchers, Andrew Cloonan, Maxwell Oslund, Matthew Uhrin; (2006) Jeffrey Mydlowski, Shane Dwyer, Alex Prough, Jonathan Connors; (2005) Shane Trexler; (2000) Mario Martinez; (1998) Andrew Soltes, Jerad Wolfrum.
Two Eaglets have been named Dream Team by the MHSHCA: Patrick Nagorsen (2004) and Shane Trexler (2005).
Twenty-two Eaglets have been named First Team All-State, two named Second Team All-State, and eight named Honorable Mention All-State by the MHSHCA.
Five Eaglet alumni are currently or have played professional hockey: Jason Basile – Bossier Shreveport; Artur Kret – Polish Pro League; Marciej Sulka – Polish Pro League; Krystian Dziubinski – Polish Pro League; Jeff Petry -- NHL Edmonton Oilers.
Thirty-three Eaglet alumni are currently or have played Junior “A” or Junior “B” hockey.
Nineteen Eaglet alumni are currently or have played college hockey at the Division I, II or III level, while twelve Eaglet alumni are currently or have played college hockey at the club level.
Cormac Lynn (1997), current Prep Academic Dean, has also coached hockey at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.
The St. Mary's Athletic Complex (SMAC) was formally dedicated on November 18, 2003 in front of 1,700 spectators on hand for the Detroit Red Wing Alumni - St. Mary's Hockey Alumni Game. The "jewel" of the SMAC is a NHL-size ice hockey rink that is in use year-round, most notably by the three-time State Champion Orchard Lake St. Mary's Preparatory Hockey Team.
